VPS Hosting Explained

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a slice of a physical server that acts as a dedicated machine of its own. The CPU cores, RAM and SSD storage allocated to it are guaranteed and nobody else can use them, and you get full root access to install any software you need. On shared hosting a busy neighbour on the same server can slow you down. On a VPS that cannot happen.

Our VPS plans run in Tier-III data centres and are set up within minutes of payment, which you can make by card or M-Pesa.

The Short Version

"A VPS is a private server of your own: the software is your choice, the performance is not shared, and you can add resources whenever you need them."

Shared Hosting or VPS: Which Fits You?

A typical site starts out on shared hosting and moves up to a VPS when it needs more traffic headroom or technical freedom.

Signs Your Business Needs a VPS

Typical moments when shared hosting stops being enough.

Online Shops and WooCommerce

At peak hours checkout gets sluggish, and search struggles with hundreds of SKUs. A VPS keeps the cart responsive through a sales rush.

Busy News Sites and Blogs

A story gets shared around WhatsApp and traffic can jump 10× within an hour. A VPS has the spare capacity to absorb that without returning a 503.

Your Own PHP, Node or Python Apps

Cron jobs, shell access, particular PHP extensions and long-running processes are all things shared hosting restricts. On a VPS none of them are off limits.

Membership Sites and SaaS

People sign in, dashboards load and email queues keep running. Here steady performance counts for more than raw bandwidth, and steady performance is what a VPS gives you.

Database-Heavy Sites

Big WordPress installs, directories holding thousands of listings and reporting dashboards all want more RAM than a shared plan can give.

Sites with Strict Security Needs

Portals for credit unions, fintech and healthcare often have to run in isolation for compliance reasons, which is exactly the separation a VPS offers.

Managed or Unmanaged VPS?

Out of the box, SiteBoma VPS plans are semi-managed. You keep root access while we look after the server underneath: kernel updates, security patches, firewall configuration and basic monitoring. If something looks like server administration you should not have to do yourself, ask us.

If your team wants no server admin at all (no sudo, no apt-get, no tail -f /var/log), choose the fully managed add-on. We install your stack, set up nginx, tune MySQL, run the backups and respond to alerts, and you simply push code and watch the traffic come in.

Included in Semi-Managed Service

  • Operating system install and hardening
  • Security patches and kernel updates
  • DDoS mitigation and a basic firewall
  • Off-site backups every day
  • Uptime monitoring, with a reboot if the server crashes
  • Hardware replacement at no charge

VPS Hosting Questions Answered

What VPS customers ask us most often.

What does VPS hosting cost?

Cost is set by the CPU, RAM and storage you choose. SiteBoma VPS plans are quoted per configuration, and you can pay by card or M-Pesa. A dedicated IP and daily backups come with every plan.

Shared hosting or a VPS: which should I pick?

Shared hosting (from KSh 80$0.62/month) handles the typical business site, blog or small shop perfectly well. A VPS makes sense once you need guaranteed CPU and RAM, root access or your own software, or you run high-traffic WooCommerce, APIs or a set of client sites. If you cannot decide, our guide explains when to upgrade, and the migration is free either way.

Which payment methods work for VPS hosting?

You can use a Visa or Mastercard card, or M-Pesa, on Paystack's secure checkout page, and the charge is made in Kenyan shillings (KES). Once the payment is confirmed, your server is provisioned automatically within minutes.

Which operating systems are available?

You can pick Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 LTS, Debian 12, AlmaLinux 9, Rocky Linux 9 or CentOS Stream. Windows Server can be supplied on request at extra cost.

Do I have to be technical to use a VPS?

Some familiarity with the Linux command line helps. If you would rather spend your time on your business, choose our Managed VPS option and we will look after everything for you.

Can I add resources quickly when traffic grows?

Yes. RAM, CPU and disk upgrades happen live: we resize your VPS with one reboot, which usually takes less than 2 minutes, and nothing has to be migrated.

Does a VPS come with its own IP address?

Yes. Each VPS has at least one dedicated IPv4 address and unlimited IPv6. Extra IPv4 addresses can be bought if you need them for several sites or for SSL.

How is a SiteBoma VPS different from a DigitalOcean droplet?

On paper the specs are close. What SiteBoma adds is payment by card or M-Pesa, a support team in Nairobi working on East African time, and semi-managed service plus daily backups at no extra charge.
