WHOIS Explained, and Why It Affects You

Registering a domain means handing your contact information to the registrar, and ICANN, the global domain authority, requires registrars to publish it in the WHOIS database. Anyone who looks up your domain can then see your name, address, phone number and email address.

With Domain Privacy Protection, the WHOIS record shows proxy contact details from our privacy service instead of yours. Genuine messages still get through, because a forwarding system passes them on to you.

A word on .co.ke domains: KENIC, which runs the .co.ke registry, already restricts some data for Kenyan domains, so they have a little privacy by default. Domain privacy protection goes further, adding another layer of protection and keeping your details away from the spam that WHOIS listings attract.

What Domain Privacy Does for You

Stop Email Spam
Scrapers collect email addresses from WHOIS and sell them on to spammers. With privacy in place, there is nothing for them to collect.
Stop Phone Spam
A phone number listed in WHOIS brings cold calls and spam texts. Privacy keeps it away from harvester bots.
Identity Protection
When your address and personal details are hidden, targeted attacks and identity theft become less likely.
GDPR Alignment
Supports GDPR and good data privacy practice around the world.
Block Harvester Bots
Bots crawl WHOIS every day. With domain privacy, what they find about you is worthless.
Auto-Renew
Switch on auto-renewal and your privacy will never lapse.

Domain Privacy Questions

The .co.ke registry, KENIC, sets its own rules, and these already limit some of the public WHOIS data. For every gTLD domain (.com, .net, .org and so on) we recommend privacy protection. For a .co.ke name, get in touch and we will advise you on your own situation.

Anyone who has had spam calls and emails start the moment a domain was registered already knows the answer. By preventing spam and protecting your personal information, domain privacy repays its cost many times over.

Yes, at any time. Once activated, it takes effect within a few hours.

No. The only thing it changes is what the WHOIS database shows. Your website, your email and your DNS settings carry on exactly as before.

Genuine contact, such as a legal notice, still reaches you through the forwarding service of the privacy proxy. Real messages are passed on to you, and your personal details stay out of public view.

It moves with the domain, as long as the registrar you transfer to supports privacy services.

Keep Your Details Private
