Your Portfolio, Domain and Inbox in One Place

A free Wix subdomain does you no favours with clients. Putting your portfolio on a domain you own costs very little for what it does for your freelance career, and it earns its keep every time a client looks you up on Google.

  • Register yourname.com
  • Professional email such as [email protected]
  • Works with WordPress, Astro or a static site
  • Free SSL, so the HTTPS padlock shows
  • Enquiry forms that deliver leads to your inbox

The Plan We Suggest for Freelancers

A single portfolio sits comfortably on our lowest-priced plan.

Your email address works harder than your portfolio

Freelancers usually build the portfolio first and leave email for later, which tends to be backwards. A potential client sees your email address before your work: on the proposal, on the invoice and in your first reply. An address on your own domain gives a different impression from a free one.

This is not about seeming corporate. An address such as [email protected] shows a client that you have been at this long enough to set it up, that you can be reached at an address that will still exist next year, and that your business is kept apart from your private life. A quote sent from Gmail is judged on price. Send the same quote from your own domain and it is judged on credibility.

There are practical gains as well. The address stays yours if you switch email provider, you can add hello@ or accounts@ later without announcing a new address, and you can give a collaborator a project address without opening up your personal inbox.

Putting your clients' sites on your account too

When you build websites for others, the number of sites a plan permits matters more than how much storage it has. Each client takes a slot, so moving from one plan to the next usually comes down to how many clients you have, not disk space.

Settle two things early on. Give each client a separate domain and a separate database, even on your shared account, so that handing a site over later is a tidy job and not an untangling exercise. And agree from the outset whose name the domain is registered in. Putting a client's domain in your own name is easy at the time, and turns into an awkward conversation on the day they decide to leave.

Once you are charging clients for hosting and want it under your own brand and nameservers, you need reseller hosting rather than a bigger shared plan. Get in touch about it when that time comes.

Questions from Freelancers

Anybody can make a Linktree or write an Instagram bio. A genuine website at yourname.com signals to clients that you take your work seriously, gives you control of your SEO, helps you collect leads and strengthens your profiles on Upwork and Fiverr.

That depends on the plan. Starter covers 1 domain, which suits a single portfolio. The larger shared plans allow more domains, which helps if you run a few side projects or host small client sites as part of what you offer.

Yes. Mail like [email protected] is part of every plan from day one. Read it through webmail in any browser, or link Gmail or Outlook using IMAP.

SiteBoma takes care of the technical SEO basics, with free SSL, fast LiteSpeed servers, URLs that can be indexed and structured data support. Ranking for your name after that comes down to your content and the backlinks you earn.

Upgrade with one click in the client dashboard, either to a larger shared plan or to a VPS if you begin hosting client sites. You pay only the prorated difference in price.

Yes. You can be billed monthly and pay by card or M-Pesa. A reminder arrives before each renewal, and you settle the invoice on Paystack's secure checkout page. Paying yearly instead saves you 16%.

Free portfolio platforms are fine for displaying work and weak at everything else. You cannot have email in your own name, you cannot take the address with you if the platform changes its terms, and the page carries the platform's branding instead of yours. A domain and a small hosting plan cost less in a year than a couple of hours of your time.

Yes, as many as your plan allows. Every client needs a domain of their own, and giving each one a separate database as well makes it simple to hand the site over later. Pick your plan by the number of client sites you expect, not by storage.

Then it moves, and we help instead of getting in the way. The files and database belong to the client. It all goes much more smoothly when the domain has been in the client's name from the start, so we recommend that, even though it is a little less convenient for you.

A .com makes sense if your clients are spread across many countries. If most of them are in one place, a country domain works well: a .co.ke, for instance, tells Kenyan clients where you are, and buyers in Kenya trust it. Lots of freelancers register both and point one to the other. .co.ke is $9.23 to register and $13.08 a year to renew.

Yes, and that is the main point of doing this. You set up mailboxes on your domain in the control panel and read them in webmail or in your phone's mail app, just as you do today. The first one takes a few minutes to create.

That calls for reseller hosting, not a larger shared plan, because it gives you your own branded nameservers and your own billing. It is a separate product, and we are glad to talk it over with you, including whether it pays off at the number of clients you have now.
